Science through the senses

The 1st grade English class has been learning about “Science Through the Senses”. We began our semester long project by focusing on the sense of hearing. First, we studied how the human ear functions using educational videos, diagrams, and classroom experiment. Through Guided Play, we would hear for ourselves.
Blind folded, one of the students had the task to tag a classmate using only their sense of hearing. The blind folded student would call out “Marco” as the other students responded “Polo.” It proved a challenge indeed. However, the students were successful and enjoyed the challenge. Students would then pass the blindfold on to the student tagged as they would repeat the process.
After our activity, students were asked to close their eyes and listen. Quietly, they observed with their ears and later recounted what they heard. Birds singing, children playing, wind whistling in the trees, planes passing overhead: the simple pleasure of listening.
